Where do I file Form I-485?

Home · Page

There is no single filing address for Form I-485. For a paper application, use the current USCIS filing instructions for your adjustment category, any related forms filed with it, where you live when the chart asks for that, and your delivery carrier. If your case qualifies for online filing, submit through the USCIS online account process instead.

Start with USCIS’s current Direct Filing Addresses for Form I-485. The steps below help you find the right entry. An address from someone else’s application—or from an old saved checklist—may belong to a different filing route.

How do I find the correct I-485 mailing address?

Work through the official address page in this order. Choosing the category comes before choosing a city or a delivery service.

  • Match your adjustment category. Find the section that describes the actual basis for I-485, such as family-based adjustment, employment-based adjustment, asylum or refugee status, or a particular special category. Read the conditions beneath the heading; a familiar word alone is not enough.
  • Check what else is being filed. A new I-140 submitted with I-485 has different routing instructions from an I-485 based on a previously filed I-140. A premium-processing request for the I-140 can add another routing instruction. Follow any direction to a separate form’s filing page.
  • Follow the linked chart and residence row, if applicable. For example, the family-based section sends readers to a separate lockbox chart that groups applicants by where they live. Do not choose whichever lockbox is nearest.
  • Select the address for your carrier. USCIS lists U.S. Postal Service addresses separately from FedEx, UPS, and DHL delivery addresses. Use the complete address for the method you will actually use.
  • Copy the entire entry and recheck it before sending. Include the “Attn:” line, any box number, suite or floor, and ZIP code exactly as listed. A building address without its routing information is not the complete destination.

The family-based lockbox chart illustrates why both category and residence matter. Use it only when the instructions for your filing direct you there. The USCIS mail-filing guidance explains the complete-address requirement and warns that a filing sent to the wrong location may be rejected and returned.

For example, changing a package from USPS to UPS means checking the courier entry again. Keeping the same address just because the forms have not changed can leave the delivery addressed incorrectly.

Can I file I-485 online instead of mailing it?

USCIS currently offers online I-485 filing for certain applicants and representatives. Check the I-485 filing options and forms available online for your particular filing. Applications outside the available online options must be mailed.

Online filing has its own rules for related petitions. Representatives can currently submit I-485 with an underlying I-130 or I-140, and an I-140 self-petitioner can submit their own I-140 and I-485 together. An unrepresented applicant who is not an I-140 self-petitioner follows a different sequence: the petitioner files the underlying petition first; after its acceptance notice, the applicant may submit an eligible I-485 through the applicant’s account. Acceptance does not mean approval.

Use the submission method you actually complete. USCIS says not to mail a form already filed online. A copy saved for your records is different from a second application sent to a lockbox.

Use the directions for the actual combined filing. Do not assume that a standalone address for one form is also the destination for the whole package.

For a permitted I-130/I-485 paper filing, start with the I-485 family-based routing instructions. Our explanation of filing I-130 and I-485 together covers when concurrent filing is available and how the online sequence differs. Finding an address does not establish that the applicant may file now.

I-765 and I-131 have their own requirements, even when they accompany I-485. If submitted later, use their current filing instructions for that separate submission. USCIS’s related-form filing guidance explains the receipt evidence needed to connect a later request to the pending I-485. Do not reuse the original I-485 address automatically.

Do I send it to my local USCIS office—or the office on an earlier notice?

For a new application, follow the current instructions for that filing. The office that might interview you, the office processing another application, and the lockbox accepting an initial package serve different functions. An earlier notice is not a universal mailing address.

If USCIS has requested evidence in an existing case, follow that request’s delivery instructions and deadline. USCIS specifically says not to send RFE responses to a lockbox; the mail-filing guidance distinguishes those responses from initial applications. It also says not to send forgotten supporting documents to a lockbox as a separate package. Use the permitted account-upload process or the applicable later instructions instead.

Immigration-court cases need a separate authority check. The I-485 address page’s section on exclusion, deportation, or removal proceedings points to special instructions and identifies exceptions where USCIS retains jurisdiction. Do not assume that every person in proceedings files in the same place. If it is unclear which agency can decide your application, individual professional review can address that question before an address is selected.

The destination is the final routing check. It does not replace checking the application itself. The complete FormExplainer I-485 Guide walks through the form section by section, explains what each question is asking, and helps you identify answers or records you may want to revisit before filing.
